In this hands-on workshop, students will explore the expressive animated drawings of South African artist William Kentridge, known for his powerful charcoal animations that blend drawing, movement, and storytelling. The class will begin with a guided look at selected works, giving students insight into Kentridge’s process, themes, and distinctive use of erasure and change over time.
After viewing and discussion, students will be guided step by step through creating their own short charcoal animations. Using simple materials and accessible techniques, participants will experiment with drawing, altering, and photographing their images frame by frame to create motion. Emphasis will be placed on process, experimentation, and expressive mark-making rather than polished results.
This workshop is ideal for artists and students interested in animation, drawing, storytelling, or contemporary art practices. No prior animation experience is required—just curiosity and a willingness to explore how drawings can come to life through movement.
