Required for select Illinois Cosmetology Act Licensees. This course introduces basic information about domestic violence and sexual assault, including definitions, factual information, statistics, types of abuse, behaviors, victim-blaming, shaming, abusers, barriers for victims to leave their abusers or seek help, and confidentiality issues. These topics will be placed within the context of cosmetology, esthetics, nail technology and hair braiding practices. The goal of this course is to provide exposure to and awareness of these issues, and give licensees the tools and information about options to assist clients. Services learned throughout the class include listening and communication, recognizing signs of abuse, ways to support a client who is a victim, and connecting clients with available community resources.
