Iowa Coaching Authorization (55 Hours)

This comprehensive course is designed to fulfill the 55-hour workshop requirement for individuals seeking their Coaching Authorization in the state of Iowa. Whether your goal is to coach at the middle school or high school level, this course equips you with the essential knowledge, skills, and credentials to lead student-athletes with professionalism, safety, and integrity.  

Instruction combines both in-person and online learning components to accommodate working adults and busy schedules. 

Course Format 

  • In-Person Instruction
    Attendance at all scheduled in-person sessions is mandatory. 

  • Online Components
    You will complete two structured online courses: 

  • Coaching Principles (Human Kinetics curriculum) 

  • Sport First Aid (Human Kinetics curriculum) 

Coursework includes exams and proficiency requirements. Materials for these components are included with registration

  • Independent Coursework
    Additional hours are fulfilled through structured assignments completed independently outside of class time.

  • Appropriate Communication 

Successfully completion of this course makes you eligible to apply for Coaching Authorization through the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners. This is required for any coaching position in any school-supported sport in grades 7-12. Please note, this is unique to Iowa, and other state licenses do not transfer.

Please read:  ** Important Details ** First Day of Class: The course calendar will be finalized, and students will be guided through the application process and setup of the online components. Technology Requirements: A laptop, tablet, or iPad is strongly recommended. Smartphones are not compatible with some elements of online coursework. Materials: All course materials will be provided on the first day of class. 18 hours of face-to-face sessions over six days (3 hours per session). These sessions feature a mix of lectures, collaboration, and individual activities.
