The Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic RiderCourse is designed for beginning riders, including those with little or no motorcycle experience. During the course, you will learn how to use a motorcycle’s controls and practice skills such as starting, stopping, shifting, turning, cornering, swerving, and braking.
Before You Register
Previous motorcycle experience is not required. However, you must already be able to independently balance and ride a two-wheel bicycle before attending this course.
At a minimum, you should be able to:
- Start riding a two-wheel bicycle without assistance
- Maintain your balance with both feet off the ground
- Ride in a straight line
- Make controlled turns
- Stop safely and remain in control
The Basic RiderCourse teaches you how to operate a motorcycle, but it does not teach the basic balance needed to ride a two-wheeled vehicle. If you cannot currently ride a bicycle or have not ridden one in several years, we strongly recommend practicing before registering.
