« back to classes page
This course prepares students for the Iowa Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) knowledge exams and entry into CDL training. Students will review key safety concepts, vehicle systems, and terminology required to successfully begin Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT).
Prior to attending class, students must read Chapters 2, 5, and 6 of the Iowa CDL Manual and come prepared to apply the material through guided review, instruction, and practice testing.
Classroom instruction will focus on understanding — not memorization — including how the information applies to real driving situations and training expectations. The course also prepares students for the pace and structure of CDL training and identifies readiness to continue into behind-the-wheel instruction.

Topics Include

  • Safe vehicle operation and hazard awareness
  • Air brake systems and failure prevention
  • Combination vehicle concepts and stability
  • Test strategies and terminology comprehension
  • CDL training expectations and professional standards
Completion of this course indicates the student is prepared to pursue CDL training; however, it does not replace ELDT or behind-the-wheel instruction.
