In this folklore-inspired workshop, you’ll explore the fascinating tradition of the Mari Lwyd, a mid-winter wassailing custom from South Wales. Traditionally carried from door to door between Christmas and New Year’s, the Mari Lwyd is believed to bring good luck, prosperity, and protection for the coming year through song, storytelling, and playful performance.
The class will begin with an introduction to the history and cultural significance of the Mari Lwyd, including its role in winter celebrations and community gatherings. You’ll learn about its symbolism, appearance, and the traditions that surround this unique folk custom.
After the discussion, you’ll be guided step by step in creating your own Mari Lwyd papercraft puppet. Using paper-craft techniques such as cutting, assembling, and decorating, you’ll build a movable puppet inspired by the traditional form. This hands-on activity encourages creativity while connecting you to a rich cultural tradition.
No prior crafting experience is required, and all materials are provided. You’ll leave with a finished puppet and a deeper appreciation for winter folklore and ritual making.
