In this cultural art workshop, students will learn about the Hungry Ghost Festival, a traditional observance in Chinese culture that takes place during the seventh lunar month. This time is believed to be when spirits and ancestors return to the earthly realm, and families honor them through offerings, rituals, and symbolic crafts.
Students will be introduced to the history and meaning of the festival, with a focus on the role of floating lotus lanterns, which are traditionally used to guide spirits, offer light, and symbolize peace and remembrance. After a brief discussion, students will create their own floating lotus lantern using paper-craft techniques.
This class encourages cultural awareness, hands-on creativity, and thoughtful reflection through art-making. No prior experience is necessary, and all materials will be provided. Students will leave with a completed lantern and a deeper understanding of how art and ritual connect across cultures.
