Automatic Transmission Commercial Driver's License Course Overview:
The Automatic Transmission Commercial Driver's License course is designed to meet the new Department of Transportation entry-level driver training requirements. This comprehensive four-week program combines classroom instruction with hands-on driving experience across diverse environments, including rural roads, urban streets, highways, and interstate systems.

Upon completion, students will be fully prepared to take the state performance examinations for a CDL Class A license. Students who choose the Automatic Transmission class will receive a license with Restriction "E," which limits operation to commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) equipped with automatic transmissions only.

Prerequisites
Applicants are responsible for all fees related to required documentation. These costs vary by state and are not included in tuition unless specifically covered by a sponsoring agency. State and federal grants do not cover these expenses. All prerequisite requirements must be completed prior to enrollment.
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English
  • Physical Capability: Must be physically able to perform required CDL skills
  • Schedule your DOT Physical with Alltest, our preferred provider (fee: $85.00)
  • Study and pass the Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) test at the DMV. A photo ID and birth certificate or passport is required to test (fee varies by state: $12.00–$50.00)
  • Request an Abstract Driving Record from the DMV along with your DOT Physical (fee varies by state $10.00–$20.00)

 Enrollment Process: 
  1. Complete your prerequisites, fill out your application, upload your documents, and then submit your application.
  2. Application Review: Once your application and documents are received and verified, we will contact you to schedule your drug test.
  3. Drug Testing: Upon receiving your test results, we will provide details about your class start date and instructions for beginning the online theory portion.
  4. Online Theory: Complete the online theory must be completed prior to starting class.
Important: Students who fail to complete the online theory requirement will be moved to the next available session.

To enroll, call the Continuing Education CDL Department at 563-441-4217. Class size is limited, and enrollment is first-come, first-served. If your preferred start date is full, you will be placed in the next available class.
