Social Workers are committed to the values of acceptance, self-determination and respect of
individuality. Through their work, they are able to assess, aid and prevent social dilemmas
through both direct and indirect involvement with their clients. This self study will assist
social workers to explore and examine the values and ethics needed to fulfill the standards of their
profession as well as meet the needs of their clients. It will help gain insight and
understanding of the ethical practice of social work and satisfy the licensure requirement for
social work ethics.
1. Understand what ethical practice is and how it can be used to guide and define what social
2. Review the legal and ethical aspects of the practice of social work as defined in the social
workers "code of conduct" found in the Iowa Administrative Code;
3. Clarify the participant's own personal philosophy, values and ethical practice;
4. Explore actual case studies related to social work ethics.
